The day it ended for Cesar Manrique was arguably a curious quirk of fate, an act of god or any other description of an accident which thereby changes the pathway of history in a way which no-one would have foretold. Although there are some that believer this tragic turn of events was potentially anticipated by the great maestro himself, as he completed his day’s work in the foundation in Tahiche and headed north to his home and studio in Haria, Lanzarote, before sundown.

As Manrique left the Cesar Manrique Foundation, not more than a few seconds later, he suffered a catastrophic accident. For the first time in many years, his Turkish driver had decided to take a holiday and Cesar had not found a replacement for the week his chauffeur was away. Cesar entered a lane from the roundabout adjacent to the Foundation, a roundabout he always claimed would take someone’s life, collided head on with another vehicle and even now, details are blurred as to who was at fault, as he could not have been going at any great speed. The beloved Lanzarotenan, Cesar Manrique, often called the Creator of Lanzarote, was dead when he arrived at the hospital in Arrecife, a matter of minutes away from the scene of the crash.

It was common knowledge that Cesar hated to drive and always employed a driver and yet on the day of 28th September, 1992, he was, so unusually, at the driving wheel of his Jaguar
